Fishing for bream with side fishing rods.
Fishing the bream with onboard fishing rods from a boat is attractive primarily because bites, even the most cautious, can be observed in the immediate vicinity. In addition, it is not necessary to wield long fishing rods, which is especially difficult in the wind. Anyway, this kind of fishing is somewhat reminiscent of winter fishing, especially on a hot summer day, when nostalgia for winter fishing comes.
It is easy to make gear for onboard fishing yourself, they are very compact and easily fit in a backpack. With them, it is easy to get to any reservoir by public transport, where you can rent a boat at the fishing base. On the road, there is no need to fear for the safety of gear – they will not hinder anyone because of their small size. The method that I want to talk about is used when fishing in reservoirs and reservoirs, where the current is small or absent. The depth in the selected place should be at least 4 meters – in a shallow cautious fish, it is afraid to come close to the boat. The boat should be light on the move, maneuverable, have low sides and therefore not too sail in the wind.
The main principles that guided me in the design of rods are reliability in work, the ability to quickly install them in a boat, stability in the wind, unsinkability in case they fall into the water. The basis of the fishing rod – the handle (Fig. 1) – is made of a piece of dense foam, about 220 mm long and 30-35 mm in diameter. In front of it, I fix a 50 mm wire coil. Using epoxy, I glue a metal tube into the handle, into which I install a vinyl-plastic whip 250-300 mm long. The “lower” position of the reel shifts the center of gravity of the fishing rod, making it stable when installed in a boat. At the same time, neither the side wind nor the rocking of the boat will change the orientation of the fishing rod and the gatehouse will always be ready to signal a bite.
Side fishing device

I glue a small wire ring from the wire into the front of the handle, through which I pass the fishing line going from the reel to the gatehouse. Setting the ring allows you to improve the whip of the fishing rod when hooking fish. The gatehouse is one of the main elements of the proposed gear. It should not only report a bite, but also ensure constant contact with the bait, even if the boat is swinging in the waves.
The gatehouse “helps” the bream raise the bait high from the bottom, not allowing it to feel excessive heaviness and have time to drop it before the hooking occurs. It can be made of a flat sheet of metal roulette with a thickness of about 0.4 mm, from which I cut conical strips of metal about 250 mm long and 3-4 mm wide in the widest part and about 2 mm in the narrow part.
I straighten the strip and bend it a bit, giving it the initially “negative” bend, that is, without load it should be bent upward at an angle of about 30 °, and under load – bend to 60 °, while the selected stock of fishing line is at least 200 mm. At the end of the gatehouse I paste a 10 mm foam ball. I make a hole in it for skipping fishing line. On the gatehouse itself, in two places with the help of threads and glue, I install “access rings”, which are easily made of cambric no more than 3 mm long. In order for the gatehouse to serve for a long time and not corrode, it should be covered with a colored waterproof varnish (you can use nail polish). It is best to paint the ball with lemon yellow paint so that you can easily see it even with side vision in any light and especially when fishing with a few fishing rods.
I attach the guard to the whip with rubber insulation from high-voltage wires, on which I put on a small piece of vinyl chloride tube. I put a gatehouse under the tube in the upper part (Fig. 1), cut a small groove in the lower part of the insulation with a safety razor – I put in a cambric of a diameter through which the main fishing line should easily pass. This will allow you to easily change the length of the descent with increasing excitement and a small flow arising from this. I use a fishing line for fishing – thick – 0.18-0.22 mm, it does not get confused in the wind at the time of fishing, when it has to be evenly laid on the bottom of the boat. If the bream approached the feeding place, such a thickness does not alarm him. At the same time, such a powerful fishing line allows you to quickly and easily catch biting fish.
As equipment I use large home-made mormyshki with a small leash and a hook or a “rocker” – this depends on the intensity of the bite and the finicky of the fish. Mormyshki cast weighing 3-4 g of tin solder. The shape should be such that the hook when installing them on the bottom does not fall to one side. In a piece of school chalk with a knife, I scrape the groove with a knife, install a tinned hook and a sewing needle sooty in the flame of a match.
