Striped hunting: large perch prefers large spinner

It is difficult for me to agree with some of the points made by the authors of these materials. Immediately make a reservation, my observations, based on personal fishing experience, relate to fishing perch in the Kaliningrad region. It is possible that the finicky humpbacks near Moscow require a more delicate approach.

Let’s start with the snap. What the authors suggest is considered universal, that is, it is not designed for a specific object of lure. Is this good or bad? What would seem to be bad if skillfully equipped fishing rods can catch both small and large fish?

Perch come in different sizes: baby-eyebrows, medium-fat “bast shoes” and really large ones – in the Kaliningrad region they are called “shibans.” Of course, the greatest sporting interest for us is the gleaming of a large perch. In fact, what kind of joy is dragging nonsense from the hole?

As I was convinced, small perches are mainly caught on small spinners and mormyshki. Therefore, I think it’s time to talk about selective lures, the purpose of which is a large fish, and not everything in a row that moves under the ice. This is possible subject to two conditions: there must be appropriate equipment and a search must be made for fishing objects that deserve attention.

The basis of the equipment is spinners. Practice suggests: large perch prefers large spinners, which are trivial, as they say, too tough. The optimal shape of such catchy spinners is shown in the figure. The hook on it is No. 12, single (a double and a tee often cling to the edge of the ice when fishing, and because of this the fish comes off), tied with a red wool thread or with a small twister attached to it. Of course, a large bream or perch can also be brought out with a small hook, but if you do not want the lure to take fry or small things, it is better to use a large hook.

Spinner Attach the spinner to the fishing line through the swivel – unbend one of its rings, pass through the hole in the tail of the spinner, and then bend the ring again – this avoids twisting of the fishing line. The spinner, when raising and lowering, will be able to rotate around its axis. Its part, the fluctuations will become more noticeable to the predator and will more sensitively affect its lateral line. The bigger the baubles, the harder it is, as a rule. For comparison: the weight of my little baubles is 5 g, large – 11.5-15 g. Fishing line is used with a diameter of 0.21-0.3 mm, respectively. Breaking load, for example, Japanese woods “Mikado” 0.40 mm – 8 kg – eliminates tearing of the fishing line from a dynamic impact of even the largest perch, but does not have a significant impact on the game.

A few words about the color of the baubles. It is quite enough to have two matt white baits: one copper, with internal soldering of tin, one of brass and a spinner plate made of red copper. And let them into business, depending on the weather and time of day.

No matter how important the equipment, but the main thing in hunting for large perch is the ability to find places of its possible habitat in a reservoir, to determine the ways and causes of migrations. Usually this is spoken about in passing, like that usually a perch stands by snags, washed by the roots of coastal trees, sticking out of the water from piles and in other places that are hard to reach for gleaming. And if they are not in the pond? How then to look for humpbacks, at random? And can a perch under the ice lead a sedentary lifestyle, such as a bream?

Perch is an insatiable, indefatigable predator, that is what you need to keep in mind first of all, trying to determine where it can be at any given moment. His habits largely depend on the characteristics of the reservoir. The ponds near Moscow are described in sufficient detail in the fishing literature, but their features are not necessarily inherent in other ponds, such as, for example, the Curonian and Finnish bays, Seliger, Chudskoye lakes and others. This means that the search and tactics for catching perch in them can differ – and actually differ – from those used in the suburbs.

Take, for example, our Curonian lagoon, a huge freshwater bag fenced off from the Baltic Sea by a narrow almost hundred-kilometer scythe. The rivers Neman, Deyma, Tava, Matrosovka, Nemonin and many small rivers feed it with their waters. A constant influx of fresh water, small, quickly heated depths, a rich forage base are favorable conditions for the habitat and development of the fish population. Among over 50 species of fish of the bay, perch is one of the most numerous. Here, his ice life is completely different than in any career lake, other conditions and guidelines for his search.

… Late autumn, pre-winter. Coastal vegetation, which served as a feeding ground for fry and shelter from predators, sank to the bottom. Fish juveniles from coastal areas went to the depths – it is warmer in the fierce cold, when the bay is chained with ice, there the bottom is richer in microorganisms that the fry will feed on. Of course, large humpbacks will also move there, to the depths, chasing the fry.

Reflections on the behavior of the perch
At one time, I "shoveled" a lot of materials on the biology of perch - the most ubiquitous predator among us, including candidate dissertations, which remained accessible only to a…
