Fishing for catfish in Primorye

I’ll make a reservation right away that the article will focus on rivers, because there are very few lakes in Primorye where catfish are caught (I certainly do not mean Hanka), but catfish live in every, even small, river. Another feature of Primorye is that catfish are caught in small sizes from 0.3 to 1.5 kg. Catching an individual more than 10 kg is a great success. Usually such monsters are found in the middle and lower reaches of Ussuri, Hanke, Razdolnaya. The larger the river, the greater the likelihood of catching krupnyak, and since in Primorye large rivers can be counted on the fingers of one hand, the likelihood of catching something worthwhile is small.

In Primorye, in addition to ordinary catfish, there are Soldatova catfish and Amur catfish. According to my observations, in some reservoirs of the Territory Soldatov’s catfish is up to 90% of the total somniferous genus in numbers. This catfish grows up to 8 kg, but its usual weight is 0.150 – 1 kg. I come across sexually mature individuals weighing 300-400 grams.

So, we will proceed from the fact that we have a river with a width of 15-30 meters where the catfish presumably lives. Fishing is carried out at night, catfish hatching is extremely rare, the exception is catfish that either live or have recently rolled from rice checks – the so-called “rice” or “yellow” (due to the light yellow color of the back and tail).

There are two types of supplies – long and short. Long is a shortened donka. The length of the main fishing line is 3-5m with a diameter of 0.5mm, at the end weighed 100g, above two leashes 15-20cm long from a fishing line 0.35-0.4mm, hooks No. 10-12 with medium or long forearm. The main fishing line is tied to a 1.5m long cut willow-bush moss stuck into the shore.

Shorty is made even easier. A hook No. 12-14 with a long forearm is attached to a fishing line D0.4mm 1-1.5m long. The fishing line is tied to a willow tree whip 2-2.5 m long. A flexible whip acts as a shock absorber, so do not use a dry box.

As you can see, everything is extremely simple. Each of the designs can withstand individuals up to 2-3kg.

Now about the catch itself. For short deliveries, a place is chosen almost without current or with a weak cycle. The depth of the place is 0.5-2m, it is better that there are a lot of snags nearby. One of the advantages of a shorty is the possibility of installing it right next to the snag without fear of losing tackle. The nozzle is live bait, usually bitter or small crucian carp. The hook is inserted under the dorsal fin and the bait fish drops to a depth of 10-15cm.

With a long situation like this. The place is selected with a moderate or weak current, it is better at the exit from the pits, near the rapids, in shallow water with a weak current, in general, where catfish go for a night out. Make sure that the nearest snags are at least 5m in order to avoid loss of gear. As a nozzle, it is better to use in decreasing order: larvae of lampreys, creeping, frogs, bear, cut fish, other worms (a trifle quickly knocks down). You can use small bait fish planted behind the lip.

I arrange the deliveries in the afternoon, and I plant them at 10 o’clock when it gets dark. I check the gear once an hour and a half. The best bite from 22.00 to 2.00 and sometimes in the morning. In by-catch there is a pike (especially for shorty ones), for long ones there is a bastard and a chebak, killer whales, and in the fall, lenok and burbot.

So, there is a bream in the pond. but where to start?
A bream is a fish that loves sections of water bodies with a moderate course or without it at all. The bream habitats in winter are deep plateaus (irrigation), wide…
